Menstrual phasedays 1 to 5 of 28

The menstrual phase. Rest. Comfort. Patience.

She's bleeding. Energy is at its lowest, hormones are crashing, and the body is doing real work. This is the recovery week. Your job is to remove friction, not add it.

In plain terms

The cycle is counted from the first day of her period, so this is day one. Estrogen and progesterone are both at their lowest point of the month, which is why the week tends to feel heavy: fatigue, cramps, a lower tolerance for noise and demands. Some women also feel a kind of relief here, because the premenstrual tension has finally lifted.

The partner's job this week is subtraction. Fewer plans, fewer decisions on her plate, fewer things she has to ask for. Heat, food, quiet and closeness all help, but which one she wants varies by person and by day, so the single most useful move is to ask what would help and then do that without making it a project.

One caveat that applies to every phase: these are tendencies across a population, not a forecast for her. Hormonal birth control changes the picture a lot. Whatever a guide says, what she tells you wins.

What she is running on

Energy
Low, fatigue, possible cramps and headaches
Mood
Introspective, tender, easily overstimulated. May want closeness or solitude, read the room.
Body
Cramps, bloating, lower back ache, fatigue, sensitivity to cold

Win this week

  • Anticipate needs. Bring water, snacks, painkillers before she has to ask.
  • Physical affection without expectation: back rubs, holding hands.
  • Handle social cancellations gracefully if she's not up for it.
  • If she apologizes for being "off," remind her it's biology, not character.

Do not

  • "Are you on your period?" Never.
  • Big plans, surprise events, or scary movies
  • Criticism, even constructive. Bank it for next week
  • Caffeine pushing, alcohol, or pressuring her to push through
  • Taking moodiness personally

What to say

  • Listen way more than you fix.
  • "How are you feeling today?" Then actually wait for the answer.
  • Validate, don't problem-solve. "That sounds rough" beats "have you tried…"
  • Skip the big decisions and serious talks this week.

Plans that land

  • Stay in. Make dinner. Put a movie on.
  • Walks, gentle stretching, low-key yoga, not the gym
  • Heating pad + her favorite blanket = high ROI
  • Run her a bath without being asked
  • Take something off her plate (groceries, dishes, errands)

Food that helps

  • Iron-rich: red meat, dark leafy greens, lentils
  • Warm and comforting: soups, stews, bone broth
  • Dark chocolate (real magnesium, not a meme)
  • Ginger or peppermint tea for cramps
  • Hydration: period bloat is partly dehydration

Touch

  • Affection without agenda. This week, touch is comfort, not a preamble
  • Back rubs, hair strokes, holding her while watching something
  • Heat helps cramps: a warm hand on her lower belly or back is gold
  • Libido is usually at its monthly low, don't initiate from your timeline, follow hers
  • If she does want intimacy, let her lead the pace entirely

General guidance for partners, not medical advice. Cycles vary, and the day range assumes a 28-day cycle with a 5-day period. If something about her health worries either of you, talk to a clinician.
